Today, the second edition of the Kaduna Books and Arts Festival was declared open. Following the success of the the first edition which had renowned authors like Zaynab Alkali, Richard Ali, Odafe Atogun and also Leila Aboulela joining in from Sudan, the Book Buzz Foundation decided to do a repeat of the festival.
The opening address was given by Lola Shoneyin, the Director of the Book Buzz Foundation after which the wife of the Governor of Kaduna State, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, talked about her book ‘An Abundance Of Scorpions’.
The opening ceremony had a mix of music, dance and story-telling performances by both local and foreign artistes. Mara Menzies’ performance of “Washu and the Meat” is one the participants will remember for a long time.
The talented Jeremiah Gyang delivered, so beautifully, a deep song titled ‘Tambaya’ – a song based on the characters in the Book “Abundance of Scorpions’.
There was also a dance performance by Ochai Ogaba.
Zaynab Alkali who was present at the first edition was acknowledged for her contributions to Nigerian literature with a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Her books have been translated to German, Spanish, French and Arabic. She has also received over 40 words
The day rounded off with an art fair which had various artistes display and explain the thoughts behind their various works.
