Exclusive: My love for music in general came from my father – Derek Chime

You saw his electrifying performance at Festival of Lights 2017 and probably wondered who had such stage presence. Wonder no more: his name is Derek Chime. He has been in the music business for over five years, runs his own studio, production team and last year put out arguably Nigeria’s most unique hip hop album of the decade “Mind Over Matter.” The rapper, songwriter and CEO of Ace Metro International Media Group sits down to talk with Judith Caleb about everything past, present and future.

JC- Where did you grow up?

Derek Chime – Jos mainly, a few other places prior to that. 🙂

 

JC – What is your musical background?

Derek Chime -I come from a family of intellectuals, music & art enthusiats, and musicians. My love for music in general came from my father. He was a diplomat, but one of his favourite pasttimes was music. He was a multitalented instrumentalist and composer with very eclectic taste.

 

JC- First kiss?

Derek Chime – My first kiss…I was 13 years old,and the girl in question was a year older.

JC – Whats your favorite love song?

Derek Chime – My favourite love song…to be honest it switches with my mood, i like a lot of stuff. I will list a few though. Halfcrazy by Musiq Soulchild, Brown Skin by India Arie, Re-offender by Travis, Come As You Are by Nirvana, Maybe Tomorrow by Stereophonics… i could go on and on.

JC – What kinda song makes you sad

Derek Chime – A good ballad makes me sad, but the good kinda sad. Also songs i attach to people i’m no longer in contact with, or events i would like to forget.

 

JC – Which love song makes you happy

Derek Chime – Way too many songs to list. Currently it is Loneliness by Chronixx

JC – Whats the craziest thing you’ve done for love

Derek Chime – I travelled across the country unannounced for an elaborate, well thought out surprise involving her friends and coworkers.

JC – How old were you when you had your first girlfriend and for how long?

Derek Chime – I was 17 and it lasted 3 to 4 months. That’s all i’m gonna say about that.

 

JC – Whats the most romantic thing you’ve done for someone?

Derek Chime – Shared my last pack of cheese and last bottle of wine. I get misty eyed thinking about it right now.

 

JC – What song would you have on repeat if you were heartbroken

Derek Chime – Again, way too many. But off the top of my head i will say You Could Be Happy by Snow Patrol or Song Cry by Jay Z

JC – Lets say you are Inlove with a girl right now and she asked you to write a love song for her.. what will be the first 5 words

Derek Chime – I can’t say right now, but i’m pretty sure at that moment it would come to me if i genuinely care about her. I think fast on my feet.

JC – What do you think of the hip hop scene in Nigeria?

Derek Chime – lol…there is no Hip hop scene, stop making things up.

JC – Musically, what are your biggest influences and who are your favorite musicians?

Derek Chime – Musically my biggest influences are the greats in every genre. Trust me i know them and have either listened to them at some point, or i still listen to them.

JC – For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words:

Derek Chime – I would say my music is honest,expressive, weird, progressive, DOPE.
