One – Day Sensitization Workshop On Policy Alignment and collaboration in the Implementation Of APPEALS PRoject in Kaduna State

The agricultural sector of Nigeria is characterized by low productivity; little and untimely access to inputs; lack of seed funds for establishing agro-processing plants by producer cooperatives; lack of access to supportive infrastructure; challenging business environment; limited access to markets; low level of technology adoption; weak quality control mechanism; and low capacity at all levels. With a view to minimizing these constraints and challenges that stagnate agricultural productivity, the Federal Government of Nigeria through the World Bank assistance, introduced the Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) Project
The APPEALS Project is a World Bank Assisted Federal Government of Nigeria programme aimed at improving the livelihood of small and medium scale farmers; and women and youth through enhancement of their agricultural productivity by supporting transition of small subsistence farmers’ production system (farming 1-5 ha) to a market-oriented agriculture and supporting middle size farmers (5-10 ha) to address constraints in enhancing their productivity as well as effective participation in value chains. Major focus of the project is production, agro-processing and value addition along priority value chains in Enugu, Cross Rivers, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, and Lagos states. In Kaduna State, the three priority value chain commodities for the project implementation are Maize, Ginger and Dairy. The project is expected to: 1. Increase productivity of agricultural produce of the priority value chains by the project supported farmers 2. Increase produce processing output of the priority value chains by project beneficiaries 3. And increase number of beneficiaries supported by the Project (of which are women and youth)
